Great documentary! Two thumbs up, because that is all I have.

This is about Intelligent Design, not Creationism. Though, by extension, this documentary does apply in a similar way to Creationists. The premise of this documentary is to show the utter disdain evolutionists have for, and their control over, those who do not publically subscribe to evolution. Freedom to speak about Intelligent Design in the scientific community is not tolerated. Anyone who exercises their right to freely speak may lose their job, be black-listed and be ostracized.

Stein interviews the bully evolutionists including Iowa State University deans, Baylor University deans, and the media-seeking Richard Dawkins. On the other side, Stein interviews those who hold to, or even mentioned (without believing in) Intelligent Design. They suffered loss of employment, tenure and jobs.

This was well done. I do have one criticism. Various interludes (short clips between statements and interviewers) caused the film to lose some dignity. I see the connections, but I would have preferred the distractions to be left out. Nevertheless, it was well-done documentary.

Unfortunately, the Academic Freedom Petition movement the Discovery Institute and Ben Stein wanted to promote has died in various states.

My positive review of this documentary does not suggest that I prefer an Intelligent Design approach to the origins of man. I am a Young Earth Creationist.

I live in Michigan. Our governor, Jennifer Granholm, has deployed a socialist approach to our state. For the past three years, people have been fleeing Michigan in search of work.

If it were not for my ability to extend my work internationally, I would have been sunk. In fact, I was going to take over my dad's contracting business. He has 50 builders and finds that there may be one job a month. Just three years ago, we were insulating 250 homes in a year.

I say all of that to say this, "BEWARE!!!" Obama has picked our "successful" governor to be on his economic team. So, now is the time to prepare!

What can you do?

1) Pray.

2) If you are a pastor, you will probably be safe (as long as you don't start a building project) :-) People, in hard times, look to God and this is a ripe time for ministry.

3) If you are like me, self-employed, get rid of all of your debt as soon as possible! Consider starting a side business on the internet. I build sites for myself and find products to sell. I also use advertisements to make money.

Dispensational Ecclesiology

This is basically a thread on why dispensationalists affirm that the Church is separate and distinct from Israel. We all grant that there are similarities. We have the same God and Creator. We have the same Savior in Jesus. We are all saved by grace through faith (although the content of that faith may vary depending on the revelation that was given at the time). But an important hermeneutical rule is that “similarities do not make equals.” So here are some reasons for the dispo view of the Church.

1) The Church began at Pentecost in Acts 2 whereas Israel existed many centuries ago with Jacob (“Israel”) and his descendants.

A) Matthew 16:18 speaks of building the Church in the future tense.

B) Spirit baptism (which places a believer into the Church) was prophesied by John the Baptizer and Jesus and did not begin until Pentecost.

C) The future ministry of the Holy Spirit indicates a new economy/age/administration.

2) The Church could not begin until Christ fulfilled certain ministries or activities.

A) There was no head until AFTER the resurrection and ascension. No head means no body. No body means no Church.

B) The Church required the Spiritual gifts to function. Those could not be given ‘til Christ ascended and sent the Spirit.

3) The Church has a mystery character to it. The NT definition of a mystery is revelation that was formerly hidden in God but now made known.

A) The NT definition of a mystery is about revelation of God not in the OT but revealed in the NT.

B) There are 4 aspects of the Church which are referred to as a mystery which would indicate it did not exist during the OT nor is Israel.

4) There are statements speaking of the Church as “new”, "created", and refer to a recent “beginning.”

What I had in mind is that we work through each of these. And to be sure, there are more which I am confident will be brought out later. But if we methodically worked through them, then hopefully we can make some progress (at least understanding the Scriptural basis for the dispo position whether you agree or not).

So to begin, I will state that Matt. 16:18 puts the building of the Church into the future. That would indicate to me that the Church is not Israel since Israel already existed. That would also indicate to me that the Church did not exist in the OT nor during the ministry of Christ (at least not up to this point in Matt. 16). Basic logic. Non-dispo responses will likely be that “church” in Matt. 16:18 doesn’t refer to a specific entity that dispos have in mind. And thus we can begin…

You have to hand it to her. She has taken so much criticism and nastiness from the media and now her own people with a lot of class and moxy. She even said that in politics you have to have thick skin. I think this shows even more a lack of judgment on the part of McCain to have members on his staff who would do such things.
Has McCain stepped up to the microphone and spoken out against these people yet? I haven't heard it thus far, but I would hope he that kind of class.

Marijuana for Medical Use

We voted, in Michigan, on legalizing the use of marijuana. The stipilation is that it is used for medical purposes. Frankly, I am not opposed to any drug that is used for medical purposes. Yet, I find this proposal was written specifically to allow marijuana use carte blanche.

Here is the proposal that passed.

Quote:The proposed law would:
1) Permit physician approved use of marijuana by registered patients with debilitating medical conditions including cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, hepatitis C, MS and other conditions as may be approved by the Department of Community Health.
2) Permit registered individuals to grow limited amounts of marijuana for qualifying patients in an enclosed, locked facility.
3) Require Department of Community Health to establish an identification card system for patients qualified to use marijuana and individuals qualified to grow marijuana.
4) Permit registered and unregistered patients and primary caregivers to assert medical reasons for using marijuana as a defense to any prosecution involving marijuana.

I have difficulty with paragraph two, paragraph four and for at least one other reason.
Number 2: How in the world are we going to enforce this?
Number 4: Unregistered patients? Great! This is frankly a way anyone can use marijuana and claim "medical use."

I feel this is only going to increase litigation. Right now, in Michigan, we have a ban on smoking in restaurants. Wait until a patient claims his rights are violated by being prohibited from smoking marijuana (taking his pills) in a restaurant. Second-hand smoking has very little affect on others. Second-hand marijuana smoking affects people in far greater ways.

So I finally broke down and did what "I don't prefer to do."

1) I preached a topical sermon. I echo the sentiment of Walter Kaiser - "the preacher should preach a topical sermon only once every five years, and then immediately repent and ask God’s forgiveness!" I try to only preach exposition, and only preaching through one book at a time (I don't do that shotgun style of preaching).

2) I preached a political sermon. Not that it did much good, although McCain won big in my county! I chose to soapbox on why I am pro-family, pro-capitalism, pro-firearms (for protection), and pro-life.

On the brightside, I got more "amens" then usual :D.

This should be an interesting topic.

Most conservatives don't believe people are born gay, but rather they choose to be gay. I tend to believe this idea. But let me pose a thought with you. If it is true that people are born gay, SO WHAT! I was born a liar. That doesn't make lying ok. I was sinful by nature when I was conceived. In the end, it does not matter what people are. It only matters what they believe (salvation) and how they let that change their life (progressive sanctification).

Apostles & Prophets completed their work & we have the Scriptures. Prophecy continues in the church:
1Cr 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men [to] edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

Tongues were a testimony against unbelieving Jews & have ceased. tongues, they shall cease for the reason given in 1 C 14:
1Cr 14:21 In the law it is written, With [men of] other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying [serveth] not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Miracles & healings do take place as God wills in his sovereignty, for our blessing, but are no longer commonplace as in Apostolic times as Christ has been fully vindicated & needs no attesting miracles.

The gifts of ministry & service continue for all time:

Rom 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, [let us prophesy] according to the proportion of faith;
7 Or ministry, [let us wait] on [our] ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, [let him do it] with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
